TL4Ed Live! Engaging Students Through Family Story Telling

May 19, 2020 @ 7:00 pm - 7:45 pm EDT

Carey FurzeIn our digital age, we often send our students to the Internet seeking information about our world as told by experts. We no longer have students in our schools that lived in the 1900s, and we often hear complaints about how kids today don’t know how to “just talk to each other”. Common Sense Media promoted the notion of a #DeviceFreeDinner in an attempt to encourage us to have a meal as a family and talk to our kids.

Carey Furze, Founder of will join me as my guest from Sydney, Australia. She’ll share her experiences working with educators and their students to collect stories from family and to retell these stories in online digital books created by the students. We’ll explore what can be learned through active listening and asking good questions that lead to stories shared by parents, grandparents and other adults in the lives of our students. Especially now, as students are spending more time than ever at home with family, how can we leverage that time and their family to engage kids in meaningful learning?

Carey Furze (@CareyFurze) is a published author and English teacher. FamilyBookform is a resource for teachers to personalize and enrich lessons by scaffolding students to collaborate with their family, peers and community in personal Communication Projects to develop Academic and Emotional Intelligence skills.

FamilyBookform is integrated into Google Classroom, available on Chromebooks and on any device connected to WiFi.

“This technology helps students connect with their family, peers and community in productive face-to-face activities that are emotional and educational, and creates an end product of high value for everyone involved, now and into the future.”
